Playing Cricket Is Only Part Of What We Do!

Bishops Cannings Cricket Club has a proud history of fundraising. The sixth BCCC Charity Clay Pigeon Shoot raised £56,000 for charity in the Summer of 2018. Here, we take a look back at the events that the club has organised, which have collectively raised over £250,000 for various local and national charities, with a timely reminder for our next Sportsman’s Dinner:

Charity Cricket Games

  1. Old England 2000- £8,500 presented to Air Ambulance. Lunch for 130 at the ground. Such luminaries as Derek Randall, Derek Underwood, John Lever and Tom Cartwright formed the opposition –all ex test cricketers against Bishops Cannings.
  2. Lashings International XI 2006 – £19,500 for various charities. Hosted at Dauntsey’s school, 350 attended lunch. Lashings players included Chris Lewis, Henry Olonga, Greg Blewett, Richie Richardson, Phil Defreitas.
  3. Bunbury XI 2013-£9,500 to Devizes Opportunity Centre. Lunch at ground for 350. Bunbury players, organised by the legendary David English, included Hampshire’s Jimmy Adams, Matt Coles and Liam Dawson, and Peter Trego and Steve Kirby from Somerset.


Charity Clay Shoot

Held bi-annually at Wellington Barn, Calstone, Calne. The first one was held in 2008, with twenty-one teams of four. In 2014, thirty-five teams of five raised £35,000 for the charities.

On June 3rd 2016 the fifth clay shoot took place, where forty teams of five raised £74,500 for charity, in particular, £43,000 to Julia’s House, the Wiltshire children’s hospice charity.

The total now raised from the five events is£153,000, mostly for local charities.

Other charity events the club has held over the recent years have been a Geno Washington gig at Dauntsey’s and a Jim Davidson comedy night, raising £9,000for charity.


Sportsman’s Dinners

A BCCC sportsman’s dinner has been held every year since 1990. For the first three years it was held at the town hall in Devizes, and since then in the Memorial Hall at Dauntsey’s. The dinner has featured most of the best sports speakers on the after dinner circuit, and had a record attendance of510. As a result of the Memorial Hall staging being changed, we are now limited to 420. Some of the recent speakers include Matt LeTissier, Michael Vaughan, Sean Fitzpatrick, Brian Moore, Martin Bayfield, Matthew Hoggard, John Parrot and David Lloyd.

The next dinner is Wednesday 3 April 2019, featuring Chris Cowdrey, England cricketer, and barrister and world-renowned rugby referee, Wayne Barnes. Both speakers have a huge reputation on the after dinner circuit and so the event will be a sell-out. Please contact Ed Davies on 01380 860305 to reserve a seat or table.

5th Charity Clay Shoot

Friday 3rd June, 2016 at Wellington Barn, Calstone

Back by popular demand, the fifth BCCC Charity Clay Shoot once again graced the hills surrounding Wellington Barn. Set in the most outstanding natural amphitheatre, the 5-man (and woman) teams shot a series of simulated game flushes including the legendary high pheasants, driven partridge, duck, springing teal, rabbits, rats, flying squirrels and a remote control airplane flying at around 70 mph. As usual, there was a little something “special” this year – axe throwing!

Thanks to the generosity of everyone involved, this event raised over £55,000 for great causes and when added to the £75,000 raised in the previous 4 charity shoots, our total now stands at £130,000.

26th Annual Sportsman’s Dinner

Wednesday 23rd March, 2016 at Dauntsey’s School, Market Lavington

Back by popular demand, the 26th Annual Sportsman’s Dinner was once again the largest sporting event the country has ever seen … on a Wednesday … in Market Lavington … in March!

We were jollied along by our adopted MC Roger Dakin and entertained by Matthew Hoggard from the world of Cricket andDean Saunders from the world of Welsh football.

With between 400 and 450 guests, the Sportsman’s Dinner has been running for over 25 years and is now an annual fixture in all the best diaries around the county. Our host Roger Dakin (former England Hockey Goalkeeper) keeps the evening running along nicely with his charming and (mostly) inappropriate one-liners. The fun starts with Heads & Tails, continues through the mystery of Irish Bingo towards a quick charity auction and then ends with 2 world-class after-dinner speakers from the world of sport. Recent speakers have included John Parrott, Scott Quinnell, Martin Bayfield, Geoff Miller, Graham Poll and Jonathan Agnew (Aggers).

The ticket price for the 2017 event will be £50 and tables of 10 are available to reserve. Please contact Ed Davies to secure your table / tickets as space is strictly limited.


25th Annual Sportsman’s Dinner

Wednesday 27th May, 2015 at Dauntsey’s School, Market Lavington

A fantastic evening was had by all at the 25th annual Sportsman’s Dinner. Hosted by the tireless BCCC Chairman Ed Davies with “our own” Roger Dakin acting as MC for the evening. We welcomed two internationally renowned speakers in Michael Vaughan & Doddle Weir.

Many thanks to everyone who helped make the evening such a success and as a result, we were able to donate a significant cheque to the Devizes Opportunities Centre once again.

Charity Clay Shoot

Set in the most outstanding natural amphitheatre, the 5-man (and woman) teams shot a series of simulated game flushes during which they saw high pheasants, driven partridge, duck, springing teal, rabbits, rats, flying squirrels and a remote control airplane flying at around 70 mph. As usual, there was something a little “special” to even the scores up – The Hilldrop Rampant Rabbit.

This event raised £35,000 for our chosen charities – bringing the total raised to date since 2008 to over £75,000.

Bunbury Cricket XI -v- Bishops Cannings Select XI

Sunday 15th September, 2013 at Spaniels Bridge, Coate


To mark the 25th anniversary of the club and to officially open our new pavilion, we are delighted to be playing against David English’s famous Bunbury XI. The Bunbury Cricket Club is no normal cricket club … in their 27 year history, they have selected 60 boys at their annual U15 cricket festival who have gone on to play for their country – as well as 306 who have matured into first-class cricketers. With a wealth of professional and celebrity talent to call on, David English’s boys are not easily put down and when it comes to fundraising they are no slouches either! Having raised nearly £16m for a wide variety of charities.
